TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS

26th July 2006 @ The Opera House Bournemouth

With the temperature in Bournemouth hitting over 30 degrees , this created the right tropical atmosphere for a performance by a Jamaican legend and his band.Toots and the Maytals are Reggae legends who have influenced many top artists and spread reggae music throught the world. This low key show of their tour was slotted in with other more substantial dates joining UB40 and The Rolling Stones in August.

At just after 9pm the band walked on stage and immediately got the crowd moving with the infectious reggae beat , an eight piece comprising of  2 guitars , bass, drums, 2 keyboard players and two beautiful girl backing singers who played out a long introduction track. Toots lastly entered the stage to massive cheers from the audience , the tempo of the music changed dramatically and they launched into probably one of their most famous numbers "Pressure dropped". The Bournemouth crowd when mad, initiated by the mosh pit which was the club.

A near Two and a half hour set followed with the quality of the music played being excellent , despite Toots being under doctors orders after a recent leg operation , he carried on and performed with sheer professionalism without compliant. Classic tracks such as "Funky Reggae", "Take me home Country Roads" and highlight of the night "Monkey Man" were played to a very appreciative audience who danced non stop to every track.

Once in a while an event happens in Bournemouth which everybody would have liked to say they had been there. The 320 people that experienced this very special gig will remember it for a very long time to come and those who missed out can only wish they had been there too. Lewis from The Sound of the Suburbs "Tsots.com" and J from the Opera House need to be congratulated for putting on such a brilliant event. Keep a eye on their websites for more great gigs.
