NEVILLE STAPE/THE BEAT/D'JANGO-

LANDMARC BOURNEMOUTH 11TH-MARCH-2007

Just off Bournemouth square you will find a converted grade II listed church that has been turned in to one new brilliant music venue with great facilities and brilliant acoustics. The Landmarc has a capacity of around 500 and tonight the place looked virtually full , I cannot think of a better way to spend a Sunday night listening to some cracking live music . Tonight's line-up put together by the SOUND OF THE SUBURBS Lewis Hawkins  , gives a great range of music from the world of Ska.

First up D'jango pronounced "Jan-go" who are a newly formed band from other such great ska bands as 2-Tonic ,Orange Street ,Urban Rhythm and Loonee Tunes. They put together a brilliant set of tunes which got the evening going , ending with a brilliant version of the Bad Manners classic "Feel like Jumping" which was very well received by the Landmarc audience , considering this was their 1st gig with this new line-up they did brilliantly especially as they were playing support to some of their musically hero's. I understand that the band were a bit nervous before going on stage , however it certainly did not show.I am looking forward to seeing a lot more of them in the future.

Neville Staple hit the stage with "Man @ C+A" -Warning warning nuclear attack ........ This is the 1st night of a 21 date tour of the UK of both these great heavyweights of the ska world .Neville Staple has surrounded himself with some very talented musicians who re-produce the hits by The specials and Fun boy Three perfectly. As soon as the band strikes it's 1st note the dance floor is soon filled with eager fans dancing along to the sound of the ska beat. I have seen Neville and his band live many times and they never fail to disappoint always producing a  brilliant evenings entertainment .Tonight for me the highlights were  great versions of the Fun Boy Three classic "The Lunatics have taken over the asylum" and a truly awesome version of "Nite Club". Running overtime due to an extended encore of "Concrete Jungle" and "Ghost Town" the set ended just as it has started with these two more excellent Specials classics.

The Beat have been touring with this current line-up for a number of years , a good band of musicians who produce  a mix of ska and reggae with rap thrown in for good measure. Despite initial problems with sound and some other unknown on-stage distraction The Beat carried on professionally with their opening track "Muscle Ska". Ranking Roger came on stage wearing a one piece flying suit which he latter discarded as it must have been extremely hot with all his dancing about on stage.Roger and his young son Ranking Junior front the band and work really well together producing some very spontaneous performances with their dance routines and off the cuff raps. The lengendry late Joe Strummer was paid tribute to when they belted out their own version of The Clash's "Rock the Casbah".

Most of the audience tonight  by their reaction just wanted to hear the tracks made famous by the original band , as during newer songs they seemed somewhat impatient.  When the tracks did come "Ranking Full Stop" , "Too Nice To Talk To" and of course "Mirror in the Bathroom" they were played to perfection.

All in all a wonderful night in a really amazing surroundings of the Landmarc Bournemouth's modern new music venue. With many more similar nights arranged ,keep an eye on the website links below for details.SEE YOU DOWN THE FRONT ??
